Social Media Adolescent Addiction Litigation

School systems report increased mental-health, counseling, crisis-response, and disciplinary burdens associated with student use of Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and Snap products. The litigation alleges that features including infinite scroll, autoplay, and notifications were designed to drive compulsive use.

Critical Misconceptions

Misconception · 01

“This is only a personal-injury case for individual families.”

Public and private school systems may have distinct institutional claims for resources diverted to address harms associated with student platform use.

Misconception · 02

“We would need to prove individual student diagnoses.”

District claims focus on the system's own documented cost burden, staffing changes, intervention programs, and lost instructional time.

The Window

The bellwether calendar guides enrollment

Thousands of cases have been consolidated before Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers. Enrollment is evaluated in relation to the bellwether trial calendar rather than a fixed public cutoff.

School systems can preserve spending, staffing, attendance, discipline, and crisis-response records while counsel evaluates filing strategy.

  • Preserve counseling and mental-health spending records
  • Document crisis-response and disciplinary programs
  • Measure lost instructional time where records permit

Recent Developments

The record continues to develop.

August 26, 2026

Meta resolves multistate government claims

Meta agreed to pay up to $17.1 billion over ten years, including approximately $12.2 billion guaranteed, and adopt youth-safety measures including default daily-use and overnight limits, school-hours notification blocks, hidden like counts, and age assurance. The agreement resolves government claims; individual and school-district claims proceed on separate tracks.

September 2026

MDL No. 3047 reaches 3,208 pending actions

The September JPML snapshot reports 3,208 pending actions. In May, the Breathitt County, Kentucky school-district bellwether resolved before trial through settlements reported at approximately $27 million in aggregate; the agreements did not establish liability or determine outcomes for other districts.

February 2027 · Scheduled

Next federal school-district bellwethers set

The court scheduled jury selection for February 3, 2027, followed by trial proceedings beginning February 8 for Tucson Unified School District, with Charleston County School District positioned to proceed if the first case resolves. Court dates remain subject to change.

September–October 2026

District participation expands as parallel state cases approach trial

Columbus City Schools and five North Carolina counties were reported among the school systems joining claims in September. Separately, two California state-court bellwethers were reported set for a consolidated trial beginning October 28, 2026. The California proceeding is distinct from the federal school-district bellwethers.

Reported developments are informational, may change, and do not predict an outcome in any matter.

Evaluate the Path Forward

Make the decision with a complete record.

Take No Action

  • Relevant spending and operating evidence may remain fragmented.
  • The district may approach the bellwether calendar without a complete cost record.
vs

Submit Claim

  • Assess the school system's institutional claim.
  • Preserve and organize records while the MDL develops.

Participation and any outcome depend on the facts, governing law, and litigation process. A district intake determines whether further review is warranted.
